Cocktails or Mocktails? How to Design a Drink Menu for Your Event
· 3 min read · By CASK & Co.
The best event menus are short, balanced and built around the guests rather than the host's favourites. This guide gives you a simple method for deciding what to serve.
Start with your guests
Before choosing a single drink, picture who will attend. Ask how many are children, how many are elders, how many are drivers and how many enjoy alcohol. A family wedding will need a very different bar from a bachelor party.
If more than a third of your guests will not drink alcohol, give mocktails equal space on the menu. If almost everyone drinks, you can lean towards cocktails but should still include at least two mocktails.
Decide the format
- An all-mocktail bar suits daytime events, religious or community functions, birthday parties and corporate gatherings.
- A mixed bar suits receptions, bachelor parties and most celebrations, because it serves both groups from one counter.
- A cocktail-led bar suits adult evening events, with a couple of mocktails kept ready for drivers.
Keep it short
Six to eight drinks is a comfortable maximum for most events. A longer list slows service, increases waste and makes the counter harder to manage. Our packages reflect this: Essential Sip has four mocktails, Grand has four cocktails and four mocktails, and Elite offers seven curated signature drinks.
If you want more choice, add a drink rather than a whole category, and keep the fastest pourers for the busiest hour.
Balance the flavours
Look for contrast across the list. Aim for one citrus drink, one fruity drink, one herbal or spicy drink and one creamy or dessert-style choice. This pattern works for mocktails and cocktails alike and ensures that most guests find something they like.
Consider the setting too. Long, cold, citrus-led drinks suit hot outdoor evenings, while warm spices and ginger suit hill venues.
Think about speed and safety
Pick two or three drinks that can be poured quickly for peak demand, such as a screwdriver or a tropical punch, and save complicated builds for quieter moments. Tell us about allergies or dietary needs early, and we will plan the garnishes and mixers accordingly.
Remember that Kerala law prohibits serving alcohol to anyone under 23, so child-safe mocktails should always be available.
Common mistakes
- Offering too many drinks, which slows the queue and wastes ingredients.
- Treating mocktails as an afterthought, when a large share of guests may prefer them.
- Choosing drinks that all taste alike, such as five sweet fruit mixes.
- Ignoring the weather, since heavy creamy drinks feel wrong on a hot lawn.
- Forgetting the quiet guests: drivers, elders and children deserve a good drink too.
Three sample menus
A family wedding reception might serve Virgin Mojito, Mango Passion, Mojito and Rum Punch. A corporate evening might serve Cucumber Mint Cooler, Green Apple Cooler, Whiskey Sour and Bay Breeze. A birthday party might serve Blue Lagoon, Strawberry Mojito, Tropical Punch and a Margarita for the adults. Each has contrast, speed and something for every guest.
